Marketing 101

Well, my son is FINALLY starting to feel much better.  He's still not 100%, but we are getting back to normal around here.  Woohoo!!  That means we are back into full swing with pictures and business stuff.  One of the things that the hubby and I did recently was take a marketing course.  We even wrote up a report on all the cool stuff we learned.  It turned out to be 8 pages long, so to spare you, I will narrow it down into several simple points.  Some of these may seem silly and like "well DUH!" moments, but you would be surprised as to how many people forget about the simple stuff.  (I'm one of those peeps.)

When it comes to photography, there are a million photographers around.  With the technological advances making cameras and editing equipment so affordable, a lot of people are jumping onto the bandwagon.  How do you make yourself stand out in a crowd?  It's really important to ask yourself this, figure out an answer, and then run with it.  Seriously.

When getting into this business, it takes more than just having a "good eye", or trying to do it as a hobby, or to earn extra cash.  You really have to dedicate yourself to the craft and to the business.  Running a business is running a business - regardless of whatever service you are providing.  It's a lot more challenging and much less glamorous than people think.  Understand this and learn about it before you jump in head first.

1.  Learn your camera.  What does this have to do with marketing?  You need to be the best photographer you can be.  You should always be improving yourself and challenging yourself to do better and to get to the next level.  Understanding your gear is super important, so when you get a gig you can deliver.

2.  Always go above and beyond.  Really do deliver superior customer service.  Word of mouth can be your best friend or your worst enemy.

3.  Remember you are always representing your business - whether you want to or not.  That mean horrible post on fb you just put up?  Ya, people will remember that and associate it with your business.  Even if it had nothing to do with it or them. Always present yourself in the most professional manner at all times.

4.  Be true to yourself.  Don't try to be something you are not.  Be honest with your customers.  They really want to get to know you and create a bond with you.  Tell them about who you are, what you like, and what you like to do.  They will like you for you.  Trust me!  And really, please don't lie.  It totally will backfire.  A perfect example of this is saying you know how to do xyz with the camera or can deliver abc.  When you can't deliver and don't know how to do it, you will look like a fool and the customers will no longer trust you.  Building up a good relationship is a must!!

5.  Be consistent.  This means not only you and what you represent, but be consistent through your work, and through the messages you put out.  What does this mean?  Make sure the messages, images, ideas, and feeling of your business are the same on your business pages, web pages, facebook, advertising, and more.  You can't show a high end business on one area, and then have a low budget operation up on another.  Similarly, you can't advertise that you are a wedding photographer and then only have images up of children and families.  Decide what direction you want to go, what kind of message you want to send to the public, and make sure it coincides in everything you put out.

This leads us too...

6.  Branding!  Yes, it really is important.  It's part of that message you send to the public.  It's part of getting them to know you and to recognize you and your work.  Put a lot of thought into this and then make sure it all matches.  Then post it everywhere.  Our logo is fun and funky, because we are fun and funky people.  We love to mix traditional portraits with the unexpected, and it works for us.  Think about how important branding is.  Think of products like Coca-Cola.  Think of their name and their logos and how they use it for advertising.  You want to build up brand recognition and desirability just like that.

7.  Define yourself and your style.  Remember what I said about standing out in a crowd?  Figure out how to do that.  It's a lot harder said than done isn't it?  What would make someone want you to take her pictures?  Is it the subjects you shoot?  Do you use a lot of props?  Do you use natural light? Studio light?  Figure out your thing and become awesome at it.  When you are really good, people will save up money and come to you.  It's the same as you really wanting a pair of name brand shoes (Nikes, Toms, Louboutin's red soled heels, Jimmy Choos, whatever you desire).  You know what they represent, what they will look like, and you will save up your money to own a pair right?  Do that with your business.  Make it so people have to have your products.

8.  Define a target audience or a target market.  What does this mean?  Well, who is your ideal client?  Do you want families?  Do you want children?  Do you want models?  Do you want weddings?  What kind of weddings? High end, DIY weddings, or funky fun low budget weddings?  Figure out who you want as customers.  Then figure out what they need/want/desire and cater to it.  Market to it and market to them.

9.  Social Media.  Oh man.  Entire books can be written about it.  But you know what?  It's out there, and most of it is free.  Put it to your advantage and use it as much as possible.  Get a blog, a facebook page, a Twitter account, and a webpage.  And use it.  People want to get to know you.  They want to see you and your business and your products.  We are all so nosy in this day and age, and it's totally different from the way things happened before social media took over.  Use it wisely, and it will pay off.

10.  It's important to follow styles, trends, and technology.  Look at Pinterest.  It's taken off.  Understand what these things are and how to use them.  Use them to your advantage to help you market, get ideas, take shortcuts, or make your workflow easier.  Use it to connect with your customers.  Make yourself available so people can contact you or connect with you.  Find ways to connect with them.

The most important message you can get from all of this is to go out there and get going!

What's up?

Hello my lovely readers and fans.  I just wanted to say "Hi!" - because it's been a while.  I always have the best intentions of updating the blog, but then life gets in the way.  Then I debate what to write about on the blog, b/c it should be for the business.  Do I write about the business?  Do I write about what's going on in our daily lives?  A combo of the two?  Then I debate some more, and then I write nothing at all.  Well, nothing at all is no fun is it?

There are so many conflicting opinions and advice to try to follow too.  Do I keep the business blog strictly professional?  A lot of people would answer yes to that question.  But I also know that there is an entirely new generation that communicates through blogs and networks and social media.  And you know what?  They love when I talk about my personal life.  I love when they talk about their personal life.  It's how we all get to know each other.

So after a lot of thinking, I decided to scrap what everyone else does/thinks/advises and go with my own heart.  And it says this: There is a lot of me and my personal interests/likes/events that shape who I am and how I photograph.  My life and my business are completely intertwined.  It's hard to separate the two - so I'm not gonna!

Here's what's up with me lately:  I have been super busy.  Awesomely busy.  And I love it.  But I can't keep up with watermarking all the pictures and uploading them into neat organized facebook albums and blog posts.  It's not that I don't want to do it.  It's just a time issue at the moment.  I prefer to put the time in with my sweet children and making my clients happy.  I swear one of these days I am going to catch up and post all of these awesome pictures.  I wonder if I can talk my hubby into doing it?

What else is up?  Well we are thinking about moving.  Say what?!  Ok - it won't be far at all.  One house we looked at was right down the road from where we live now, but we have come to the conclusion that we are ready for a change.  And hopefully a walk-in closet.

House hunting is exciting and stressful all at the same time.  I lay awake at night thinking/dreaming/getting excited about a property, and then find out later that it is not the one for us.  I know it will happen and it will come, but wow!  This stuff can drive you batty.  It reminds me of being in wedding planning mode - you know where you get super-hyper focused on every little detail?  Yup.  It's just like that.

So that's what's up with me.  Oh, and my lovely hubby was nice enough to get me an awesome present.  An 85mm 1.4 prime lens.  Nikon - of course!  It's been fun shooting with it!  I can't wait to test it out some more!

Yes, my life is a circus!  A three ring circus!

So what's up with you?

Changes Comin' At Ya!

Hey everyone!  I just wanted to let y'all know that I am trying to update both the webpage and the blog.  (Really, no laughing now.)  I'm starting with the blog first, since that seems to be a bit easier (although not by much).  We want it to reflect our personalities a bit more, and to be a little less generic.  So if you see weird stuff going on or strange looking templates - it's probably me cussing the computer while I work.

Please pardon our dust, or our cyber mess while we make things better!

AND if you see weirdness going on and know how to fix it, or just have suggestions in general, drop me a line.

Hello 2012!

Happy New Year!!  2012 should be an awesome year and we have a bazillion things we want to accomplish!  Here's our list of goals for the new year:

My personal goals are to sleep more, exercise more, and eat less.  That is so much easier said than done!  I always try to cram a ton of things into a tiny space of like 24 hours, so I am always running around.  I really need to work on pacing myself and taking care of myself, and letting everything else fall into place.

For the business, we have set a lot of goals.  The first is to update and refresh both our blogger site and our webpage!  We want to put our best foot forward for our customers to see.

Weddings!  We love photographing weddings and just do not get to do them enough in our area.  To change this and reach our wedding goal for the year, we have to complete the next goal of - Marketing!!  This is a big one.  I seriously want to canvas the area locally and branch out across the state.  No joke.

Slideshows.  Yes, we want to incorporate more of these.  I'm learning.  And I found an awesome website to help me out.

Again with the webpage.  Everyone has a smart phone these days, so guess what?  We need to make our webpage compatable with those too.

And last but not least - Shooting!  Yes, we really want to keep practicing and working on our lighting techniques to be the best we can be.  We want to continue to grow and be creative.

Look out 2012!  We are ready and determined!!

Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year

Yes, I am well aware of the fact that it is already 2012!  This past year has just flown by and I am shocked by my lack of updates on the blog.  Well, actually - I'm not.  December is always the CRAZIEST month for me with all of the awesome studio work that Christmas brings along with it.  Add in a few weddings, and my own anniversary, and well - I usually end up sick and completely sleep deprived and delirious by the time Christmas Day rolls around.  It's not exactly the best way to be spending time with your loved ones - lol!!

This year I had to add in the mix an array of computer issues.  Ugh!  My laptops that I love to use (b/c I can sit on the couch and edit pics while watching tv) are really old and struggling to keep up with me.  Then one got a virus that necessitated it to be wiped completely clean!  I am always really good about backing up customer's pictures, but I always put mine off.  So I had to rush around and take hours and hours to back up an INSANE amount of pictures.  Like 11,000 pictures.  On a slow, ancient laptop.  Sigh.  It's just not what I wanted to deal with at Christmas.

At least the pictures are all saved and backed up.  The computer has been restored with new and faster software.  Lightroom 3 anyone?  Ya, I have new programs to learn.  It's both a "YAY" and a "Awww MAN" feeling at the same time.  I am still not completely issue free either.  The hubby is currently working on networking the computer.  I can't gain access to the server and see or access any of my awesome pictures.  Which also means, no cool blog posts full of pictures.  The hubby has an awesome computer (which I am currently on), but he needs it for work, school, and games (ugh!), so I don't always have access to it either.  AND one of the big things that I wanted to do was update my website while on break.  I have seriously taken some super awesome pictures lately and I want to show them off to the world.  The next bad news is that I lost all of the website templates when the computer died.  I have access to some of them through my website, but I will kind of have to start over from scratch b/c I am not a web designer. Sigh.  Starting to feel my stress? (Complete with eye twitches!!)

I have had several friends respond with, "Get a Mac, and you won't have these problems."  It's tempting.  But expensive.  And I know nothing about Macs.  And my hubby hates them.  He builds PC's.  A Mac in the house might be grounds for divorce.  (Ok, not really, but I swear he won't help me with it one bit.  Lol!)

So for those of you still reading along out there (all twelve of you), this is the side of business that sucks!  OMG!  It can be hard and tough at times.  Most people only represent the shiny glossy side of this world.  People think it's all fun and games, and lots of money and glamor.  I could only wish!  I find that most of us don't want to talk about the negatives, and I have even found myself lately not even posting things on fb for fear of sounding too down or dismal.  I wish I had a magic wand to wave all the bad away and magically make it go away.  Of course I could be charging more for sessions and then just hire someone else to deal with it right?  There's an idea....

While it may seem like I'm complaining, I'm really not.  I am just like a bazillion other photographers and entrepreneurs out there just working hard to make it.  I really want to MAKE IT!  I am determined to get somewhere in this business, and these are the issues and the drive it takes to deal with and overcome these obstacles.  I really enjoy it - not the obstacles - but the people, the creativity, and the shooting.  I love learning every bit about it, and I love making people happy through my work.  One of the best Christmas presents I had this season (other than a super awesome 35mm prime lens from the hubby) was getting to deliver prints and photo gifts to customers this season.  We even surprised quite a few, and those were the best reactions!  Watching people cry tears of joy and happiness over images we created just makes us feel all warm and fuzzy inside.  <3

It's a little late, but Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah.  I hope you all had an awesome time with family and friends!

Landscape Saturday Night

My hubby is usually THE BOMB when it comes to landscape portraits.  No joke.  I will take 20 trying to get the camera settings just right and none of them will look awesome.  He will take 1 that will blow me out of the water.  Seriously.  Most of our contest entries for magazines and art galleries are his landscape shots.  (Now just don't ask him to photograph a baby.  That's a whole nother story.)

SOOooooo, I was really surprised and proud of myself when I imported these on the computer today.  - My daughter's dance school moved into a new building that is on the outskirts of town.  Every week when we go, I think to myself that the landscape would make for pretty pictures, but we are always running around like crazy.  I have never bothered to try to photograph it.  Then this week was their last week of class, the one where they do a little performance for the parents.  Naturally, I brought a camera.  On the way into ballet on Tuesday, I was blessed with this awesome sunset:

I saw how pretty the sky was and just snapped a couple (yes 2, not 20) pics on my way in.  This one is pretty much straight out of camera - I had to convert it from a raw file to a jpeg.  But other than that, this is exactly how the sky looked.  Oh so pretty!

Then on Thursday, we pulled up to see the sun just breaking through the overcast sky.  It made those awesome rays coming down, and I always think of them as God's rays.  I think some people call them God's fingers, but whatever they are, I think they are heavenly.  It makes me warm and fuzzy inside when I see them.  So naturally, I had to snap a picture of that!

Amazing!!  I love it!  Again, it only took me a couple of shots to get this.  (Happy, warm & fuzzy sigh.)  Can I just say I love my camera and I love being able to capture beauty with it?

Well, happy Saturday night.  Oh - well happy Sunday morning now.  LOL.  It's close enough right!?

Fall is in the Air

I swear that I take pictures of other people and other people's children.  Honest.  I really do.  But Kenzie is such a beautiful child and so willing to be in front of the camera, I just can't help myself.  Normally, when I get these great big ideas in my head and want to do themed or styled sessions, I have only a few willing participants.  Many people are traditionalists, and want traditional portraiture.  I am slowly convincing clients to come over to my way of thinking, and the more that I do, the better my sessions get.

I just adore getting to be creative and think of all the ways to capture the essence of a person.  This session is a perfect example!  Kenzie and I played all sorts of games - Simon says ("Simon says touch your hat", "Simon says blow the flowers at me"), peek-a-boo with leaves, and "let's see who can throw the leaves the highest in the air".  We had so much fun doing it that she (almost) forgot she was in front of the camera.  The end result is this beautiful collection of fall images that I will cherish forever.  I hope to create more images like these and to convince others to let me do the same.

So happy photographing, happy playing, and have a happy fall!

Enjoy!

Welcome Packets

For the past several weeks, I have been working on kickin' it up a notch at the studio.  I really want to show a level of professionalism and for our customers to have the best experience possible.  I want their sessions to be experiences from beginning to end.  We do this now, but even more, I want them to associate us with art, quality, and our brand.  We are special and unique, and I want to reassure them of this point.  SOOOO...I have been working on all of our branding and marketing materials.  Here is part of the welcome packet that goes out to our customers once they book with us.  I just love the way they turned out, and I can't wait to put the whole shebang together!

Things I have done this week..

Stared at my favorite pairs of Chucks (aka Converse low-top sneakers) sitting on my dresser unlaced like they have been for the passed month since I washed them.  Somehow the heat is preventing me from mustering up the energy to lace them up and wear them.  It's flip flop weather.

Conjured up some crazy ideas for themed photo shoots after being inspired by a few other amazing photographers.  I get these bugs in my head and won't rest until I accomplish them.  Which led me to...

Creating a disaster in my house while crafting projects to go with themed photoshoots.  The sewing machine and material have taken over the kitchen table and we've been eating off of tv trays.  There is everything from costumes to material to paint to props in every room in the house.

Made my husband and his friend go drive several hundred miles to retrieve a carousel horse for me.  I live in a tiny house with a bunch of photography junk already crammed in here and now I have to find room for this too.  LOL.

I created my first complete modeling portfolio.

I spent 2 days photographing in 100+ degree weather and have the lobster sunburn to prove it.

I updated my webpage all on my own and figured out things the tech help people didn't.

I won a photo contest with my amazing picture of Mackenzie in the field of wildflowers and got free photo editing stuff and a photo book out of it!  Woo-Hoo!!

I've been inspired over and over again this week.  I hope it keeps leading me down the right path.

New Additions to our photography family

I started this post a while back, but got SUPER busy.  Busy in the world of photography is a good thing, and that means I am earning the money to pay for all of these goodies.  I made a huge decision to upgrade everything in the studio and pretty much rebrand ourselves.  For those of you who follow the blog, you've seen my logo change and even the style of shooting change.  I have a vision in my head of where I want to be in this business, and this was the next logical step.

I upgraded my camera gear to a D3 and a few prime lenses (50mm and 85mm), along with a new SB800 speedflash.  I was shooting on a D90 with an SB600 speedflash, and I still love that gear.  I also wanted to get a new bag to house the stuff and keep it protected since all the new equipment is worth more than the blue book value on my car that I currently drive.  I decided to go with an Epiphanie bag.  I got the Clover bag in hot pink (Much to my husband's dismay).  I originally wanted the Paris bag - and I love the purple that it comes in - but the final decision was made based on a zipper.  The Clover zips and the Paris does not.  I spent days, weeks even, researching bags and safety and comfort, and decided that this was the best one for me.
I was SO excited when it came in that I took a bunch of pictures of it.  Then I never packed it.  What?  That's right.  I've been busy.  I have just chucked entire cameras with lenses attached and all in there.  So yes I have used it (a lot), but it is so far from organized it's not even funny.  It holds a ton of stuff, and I hope that in the next week or so, I should be able to actually pack it correctly and see how much it can really hold.

LOVE this quote!!  So inspirational.

Check out the cool camera fob!

They have tucked all these cool photography quotes into all the pockets of the bag.  It's like a fun surprise.  Speaking of Annie Leibovits, have you seen her new Disney pictures?  AMAZING.

So why did I choose this bag?  For several reasons.  First, it's supposed to be super comfortable.  And for anyone who has ever had to carry around a ton of gear and then stand for hours holding it, you know that comfort is essential. It has both a long sholder strap, plus two long handled braided straps to offer a multitude of ways to carry the bricks...err..I mean cameras around.  Plus, it has a place to put a netbook, or laptop, or ipad, and/or contracts (depending on what equip. you use).  I live by and on my laptop, so I thought that this was great.  It also has a zipper, which was super important to me, since I didn't want all my junk falling out because I am 1) super clumsy and 2) super messy.  Plus it is an important safety feature.  ANOTHER reason that I chose and Epiphanie bag over some of the others (like Kelly Moore) is that it is super padded and large enough to house my new camera.

No I do not represent them in any way  - although if they want to sponsor me or send me more bags, I'm all for it ;)  I just know in my own quest to find information on the bags and how they compared to others, there was really very little.  I really do love this bag.  However, I still want a Shootsac.  I think I am going to attempt to make a homemade version of one b/c they are serious $$, and I don't see the value in them like I do this bag.  The Epiphanie bag is like my storage for all my gear.  The Shootsac is a way to hold an extra lens while I am out on a shoot.  (As opposed to sticking them in my pocket, or making family members hold them, or making family members of the customer hold them.)  I never saw the need for this before until I started shooting prime lenses.  Now it is becoming a necessecity.

And last but not least, here is a little bit of my camera family - INCLUDING my new D3.  This is one super duper powerful camera, and I am still learning everything there is to learn on it.  It's going to take me quite a while.  I'm in love.  I could rant and rave about this camera, but there is tons of information available on the web about it, and those people do a much better job of explaining why it is such a good camera.  However, if Nikon wants to give me a sponsorship too, I'll be more than happy to get into the specifics ;)  I'm not going to hold my breath on that one though.

Ramblings, Bags, and Business

So Dan and I are working on some new business strategies and we will be making changes to the business soon.  We've had a great business plan and idea in our heads for a while and we've  been working our way towards implementing them.  I feel like we've finally made it to the next step in our business, and we are ready to make over everything to help us accomplish this.  I wish I could jump right on it now, but I have three weeks left to finish my degree and a large paper looming over my head tonight.

I find myself writing this post at 1 am in the morning because I am tired of looking at all the boring research on differentiated instruction and nontraditional students not completing college.  I find myself sidetracked by blogs with beautiful photography, and even found Studio 222's old blog.  Some of their earlier work is just as beautiful as their new work.  You can see growth in their personal style, but they are great photographers inside and out.  It drives me nuts because I look at my earlier work and think I just need to chuck it in the recycle bin on my computer.  Some of it I love for different reasons, but most of it needs a lot of work done on it.  The one good thing that I can honestly say about all of this is that we all have to start somewhere, and I am improving my skills every time I photograph.  I work at my craft and strive to excel at it and accomplish more and more.  I hope that our new business plan will help us accomplish this!

Of course, no business revamp is complete without some shopping, so I want to share some of the items I've been lusting over.  As I've previously mentioned, a new website is one of them, but I haven't decided on one yet.  I have an idea in my head of what I want, and I am going to do a lot of research to get it as close to that as possible in reality.

Also, I don't have a bag big enough for all of my gear.  I tend to shove things (like expensive lenses) in my pockets when out an about, and I've decided that it's time to do something about that.  Again, I'm still weighing my options, but here are a few of the cool bags I'm looking at:

These are awesome, and I want this Paris bag in the purple shown in the pic.  They are a bit pricey, but I've paid more for purses that I've only used for a few months at a time.  Plus, if I'm going to put a camera that's worth more than my car in something, then I want a bag I can trust.

A few other quick fix bags for toting lenses around on shoots are the shootsac- which you can see a glimpse of in the above pic -
 and this low(er) budget version:

I love that this one can be customized even more that the shoot sac and it's about $100 cheaper!
The Epiphanie bag and the shootsac bags have different purposes, which means I may just have to get one of each!  We'll see how well the hubby goes for that strategy...

The Business Side of Things

Photography is one of the most difficult businesses to be successful in.  It is very similar to being a musician, in that one's chances of becoming rich and/or famous, or even just successful enough to earn a living are teeny-tiny.  Also similar, is the amount of hours spent studying, learning, practicing, and editing.  It's no wonder that both of these professions are my passion!  The problem with both of them is time.  Anyone who wants to make it in this business needs to be prepared for a lot of self-sacrifice, and have a lot of time available.  My problem is that time is the one area where I come up short.

As a busy mother of two, running my own business, and earning a Master's degree, I rarely have time to sleep - much less concern myself with learning photo editing programs and website design.  There are aspects of my business that need improvement, and I love the fact that I am getting motivation and learning valuable information from other photographers in the field.  I hope in the upcoming months that I will be able to take the time to improve in each of the necessary aspects in order to really push myself up on another level.

For myself and anyone else learning who is wanting to join the business, the most important advice I can give is to learn, learn, learn everything possible.  And then practice it.  Over and over.

The internet is a vast array of information.  There are tons of tutorials and demonstrations and even schools out there that are free.  All of these are worth checking out.  I have been taking my own advice as of late, and here are some of the websites and blogs I have been checking out:

http://www.smugmug.com/ - This is the website that I use for my photo galleries and professional printing.  I <3 Smugmug!  They are awesome!  It is entirely possible to create a complete webpage through this company, but again - I am lacking in that department.  My website is one of those things that I really want to sort out and improve upon.

Speaking of websites - another great way to create a professional website is through a Blogsite - just like this one. http://www.blogspot.com/ is where I am at now.  It requires purchasing a domain name through another site such as godaddy.com, but then it is possible to create your own website through them.  (Again - I haven't sorted out the actual how yet.  As soon as I do, I promise to share.)

Another great site I've found for photographers that is affordable it http://www.bludomain.com/ They have templates available for purchase that are specifically made for photographers.  They look great and easy to use.  Where were they a couple of years ago when I was banging my head against the wall trying to build a website???

It sucks that I just renewed my website for another two years.  I did it out of necessity since I didn't have the time to sort out all these options.  Although - how did I find out about all of these options, you ask?  There's a great weath of photographer blogs and awesomeness on the web where people are really willing to help each other.  One place I just joined is http://www.iheartfaces.com/ It is a community of photographers who help other photographers through tutorials, community, forums, contests, and more.  I have just started to tap into the wealth of information on there.

My favorites for camera gear: http://www.adorama.com/ and http://www.bhphotovideo.com/

And finally, some awesome blogs with some fabulous photography:
www.rootweddings.com/blog
http://www.studio222photography.com/blog/
http://thearthurclan.com/
